Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am 18 weeks pregnant. I noticed that during my pregnancy my breast size has increased by 2 cup sizes, and I feel that my breasts are sagging. Will they become alright after delivery? Should I take any precautions?
Varuna (Jamaica)

A: The breasts do get heavier and the size also increases during pregnancy. Wear a firm support bra during and after pregnancy. Chest muscle exercises after delivery will help the muscles remain firm.

Q: In which month does milk start forming in the breast? (2) What is the advisable position of sleeping in the eight month ?
Madhuri (Nashik, India)

A: Milk formation in the breast takes place in the initial months of pregnancy---it can be expressed from the breast in primi patients as early as 16 weeks of gestation. It is best to sleep if possible in the left lateral position---it helps improve the utero-placental circulation.

Q: My breasts have stopped leaking. What could be the reason? Is this because of low water intake?
Tamanna (Wayne, USA)

A: If you are pregnant, it is alright if the breasts do not 'leak'. If you are lactating, increase your water and milk intake and see.
