Boosting Brain Power of Child

Boosting Brain Power of Child

Carrying out certain simple activities can help you to boost the brain power of your child. Have a quick look at the five ways to boost brain power of your child.

There are almost a hundred million neurons in the brain of your baby when he is born. And by the time he completes his first year, these grow up to a trillion brain cell connections which are clinically referred to as neural synapses. Therefore brain wiring needs to be started at a very early stage so that no potential for development is lost. There is a saying in this regard, “use it or lose it!” So as your child develops, you need to make an effort so that the synapses are wired together in the desired manner, that the child is ready for further stimulation by the time he is ready to be sent to school.

There is an interesting point to note here, the brain of an infant does not have the same neurological hard wiring akin to an adult, using which an adult can learn languages, but the infant’s brain is very receptive to impulses and thus more pliable due to its vulnerability. The number of neural connections that is present in an adult brain is half the number compared to that of an infant!

5 Ways to Boost Child’s Brain Power

So here are five steps that will help you boost your child’s brain power and make the most of his brain wiring stage:

  1. Ensure a Healthy Start

This refers to providing the baby with a healthy start even before he is born. You can readily do this by making sure that you stay as fit as possible during your pregnancy. Consult your doctor about certain drugs that can potentially harm the brain development of the kid, but in certain cases are still recommended by doctors. This is a case of drug abuse and the infant born under such circumstances, are found to suffer from learning disabilities. Similarly abstain from direct and passive cigarette smoke as this can cause learning disability as well.
  2. Have Conversations

After the baby is born, hold conversation with the infant. You will always be greeted with infant coos and you should respond to them with delighted vocalisations. Draw out clear syllables in a high-pitched voice as you exclaim a response to the child. In psychological terms this is called parentese. These are basically rich inputs that you are providing for the ready development of the brain areas that are related to speech and understanding language.
  3. Play Games that Require Activity

Play games with the baby that involves the use of hands and turning of the head. These can be little piggy or peekaboo. These games have a sequential aspect that helps the infant build and develop responses.
  4. Be Attentive Towards the Kid

When the baby points at something, look at that direction and respond to him. This will make the baby feel that his observations and thoughts are important to you. He will thus open up and be more expressive which will directly impact his learning abilities.
  5. Cultivate an Interest for Books

Take up books that have large and colouful pictures. You will find the baby pointing to the pictures and making noises. Respond to them by pointing out at the pictures and making animal sounds that go with the picture in the book, say of that of a cat. This will help in learning, associating and building knowledge. This is a receptive language that will eventually transform into the expressive language as the baby begins to learn formally.

Finally, it is observed that being responsive and sensitive towards the baby helps the brain development of the child. Touching him often, showering love on him, stroking his tummy and hair while attracting his attention towards your speech helps in boosting brain development. It also helps in making the baby understand spatial differences like, under, over, far and near. This will help him acclimatise to the environment that he is a part of. You must also ensure that you go with the temperament of the kid. Some are naturally chirping, while some are quiet observers. So try not to break the natural tempo. It helps in boosting his brain development readily.
