Effects of Yelling at Children

Effects of Yelling at Children
Yelling at child will not only harm his feelings, but also make him afraid and worried hampering his learning abilities. This is extremely damaging and you need to check this immediately. Read on to learn about the effects of yelling at a child and what you can do to prevent the damage.
There is no such fact like perfect kid or perfect parent that exists. No matter what you do, children will fight with their siblings, ignore their chores, talk back or do plenty of things that would definitely annoy you.
For most parents disciplining their child means punishing them hard so that they would never repeat mistakes. However, sticks and stones break bones but words can do real and long term harm to your kids. So, it is very important you think and check how often you yell at your kids and what effect does this have on your child.

Harmful Effects of Yelling at Children

Have quick look at the 5 harmful effects which yelling can have on your child.

1. Leaves the Child Confused

Even though your child may understand that when he or she does something wrong, you yell, he or she might get confused and do not get the real message. On the other hand long term effects are fear, stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, delay in proper growth and development, behavioural problems, emotional issues, academic problems, thwarted coping skills and social difficulties.

2. Yelling is a Form of Emotional Abuse

Most of you might not agree that raising your voice on any of your child’s act is an abuse, but experts believe it is. In fact, studies have shown that yelling causes severe damage to kids and that can be even more damaging than physical abuse.

3. Giving Rise to Aggression or Shame

When you yell at your child, he would either feel angry or ashamed which might lead to inferiority complex leading to much deeper impacts on your child’s personality. No parent would like to have any of these bad qualities in their children.

4. Hurts Self Image

When you yell at your child it hurts his self image. He will start thinking that he is not capable. He is worthless and useless as well. Your child will not have a healthy sense of self.

5. Concentration problems

Children who are yelled at by their parents often and up to a long period of time are found to be having concentration problems. It becomes really very difficult to help child focus on specific things.

What Should Parents Do to Avoid Yelling

Yelling can cripple your child’s mental health. So, you need to work on the way you deal with your child. Some tips are mentioned here:
  • Focus on saying what to do rather than on what not to do.
  • Praise their good behaviour and also make them aware of the consequences of disobeying.
  • Read articles and learn new ways of parenting so that you have more effective ways to raise your child.
  • Listen to yourself and what you want to say to your child.
  • If you are angry at something else, make sure you sort it out when you are away from kids.
  • Take time out and have a chat with your friends, other parents or your spouse if you feel very angry.
  • Learn about positive ways to discipline your child
  • Do not beat yourself up. Everyone has bad days. Stay calm and it will pass.
Parents usually have no experience and they follow the old fashioned path, knowingly or unknowingly. Just keep in mind that there are many positive ways to deal with children of all kinds. Constant use of gentle reminders will get things done faster and more effectively.

As a parent, the best you can do is spend daily 15 minutes towards having effective conversation with your little one from a very young age and make sure that during this time you kid looks into your eyes and feels free to share his piece of mind as well as is ready to hear you. This practice would train your kid to know what is right for him and he will be used to listening to you.

Yelling can have a very bad impact on the mind of little children so parents should control yelling at any cost.
