How safe is your baby at home?

How safe is your baby at home?

Children are very curious by nature. When a child starts to crawl, she tries to explore every nook and corner of the house. During this period parents must keep a watchful eye over the child as there are more chances of accidents. If we take some pre-emptive measures then we can prevent mishaps.

Once your child starts to crawl, danger lurks at every corner of the house. You need to watch her with a hawk's eye to make sure she stays out of harm's way.

Never leave your child alone on a bed or sofa, for even a minute. Read on to find some things which you must take care of in order to keep your baby safe at home.

Safety Precautions While Bathing a Baby

Have a quick look at some of the precautions that you can take while bathing your baby.

  • When bathing your child, fill the tub with enough water to just cover his legs when she is sitting in it. And never, ever leave your child alone when he's in a tub.
  • Keep a rubber mat at the bottom of the tub so it is not so slippery.
  • Never leave your baby alone in the bathroom.
  • Check the water temperature before putting it on your baby.
  • Do not leave your baby unsupervised in the tub.
  • Do not leave the tap of hot water running while bathing your baby.

Baby’s Sleep Safety Tips

Here are some tips that will help you to ensure that your baby is safe while sleeping.

  • Make sure the crib is secure, and the drop-down sliding door is shut if you ever leave the room with your child in the crib.
  • When your child is sleeping in the crib, remove all toys.
  • Use a firm mattress.
  • Make sure that the crib is properly installed and no parts of it are broken or missing.

Toy Safety Tips

Read on to find some toy safety tips.

  • Do not let your child play with small toys like marbles, which are small enough for him to swallow. There is a danger he may choke.
  • Make sure that the toys you buy are age appropriate and meet all safety standards.
  • Do not get toys that have small parts that can be easily swallowed.
  • If you find any broken toy, you must not give it to your baby.
  • Avoid giving toys with strings as they can get tangled in your baby’s neck.
  • Do not give soft toys to small babies as they have habit of sucking on it due to which they can swallow its hair.

Other Important Tips for Keeping Babies Safe

Below mentioned are some more tips for keeping your baby safe. Take a look at them.

  • Keep knives and sharp objects out of reach at all times. Lock drawers which contain tools. In fact, lock all accessible drawers and cupboards which can be locked.
  • Try and keep houseplants outside in the balcony, or place them at a height, or your child will be nibbling on mud all the time.
  • Install a car seat in your car. The car seat should be facing the rear of the car, and should be fitted in the middle of the back seat.
  • Attach soft rubber corners and edge guards to the corners of low-lying tables, so your child's head does not get hurt if she bangs it.
  • Keep your room door locked when you are in the room, so your child can wander about where you can keep an eye on her.
  • If you have a dog, keep him outside your child's bedroom, especially if he sheds a lot of hair - or ticks!

There's no better substitute to a watchful eye. Till your child turns almost three, you or someone you trust needs to be watching her all the time. Dangers are lurking everywhere. So, it is a must for baby’s caretaker to be watchful all the time.
