Pain
Relief without Drugs
How will I get pain
relief without drugs
Massage, music or change of position
Changing your position may help.
Try leaning against your partner or a wall, walking and socking your pelvis.
You must relieve the pressure off your back. You could ask your partner
to massage you or play certain music that you find soothing.
Vocal release
You could diffuse the pain by making
sounds, moaning, groaning or screaming as a way of releasing tension.
Visualization or hypnosis
Some women find relief through the
technique of visualization, as creating mental pictures is a proven way
of calming fears and reducing pain. Hypnosis has also been known to help.
Birthing pools
If your hospital has a birthing
pool, lying in warm water can be very relaxing and soothing and brings
relief between contractions.
Acupuncture
If acupuncture has helped you before,
this is a good time to try it again. But only if you have an experienced
acupuncturist on call.
Blocking nerve impulses
Trans-cutaneous Electrical Nerve
Stimulation (TENS) is a method available to block the nerve impulses to
the brain, with the help of an electric current that stimulates the production
of endorphins. Electrodes are placed on both sides of your spine, and you
are given a handset to regulate the amount of stimulation and pain relief
that you require.
