Vaccuum Extraction What is vacuum extraction Vacuum extraction is a method of
delivering the baby in situations where the baby is "stuck" in the birth
canal.
How is vacuum extraction performed The vacuum extractor (ventouse) is
applied to the lowest part of the baby's head, the shape of which remains
unaffected. The ventouse is a metal plate that looks like a cone-shaped
cup, which is placed over the baby's scalp, using an attached pump to create
a vacuum. This then serves as a handle to gently rotate the head and apply
traction.
Is vacuum extraction better than forceps Widely used in Europe, the vacuum extractor (ventouse) is a gentler alternative to forceps as it takes up less space in the vagina and is easier to apply. It can be used without an epsiotomy and before the cervix is fully dilated. To add your views on this article or read others comments Click Here
