How to Avoid Stress at Office

How to Avoid Stress at Office

The office can be a very stressful place for those who have trouble balancing tasks and time effectively. In fact, stress at office is also blamed for a variety of heart diseases and other disorders like migraine, acidity, general weakness etc. Plus, office stress can manifest itself in other situations. It can also affect your professional performance and therefore your career.
Let’s see how you can avoid stress at the workplace.

Why are you stressed in office?

There can be a variety of reasons that you feel stressed in office. Identifying these reasons can help you avoid these in the future. Some of them may have an easy solution but other causes for stress can be a bit more difficult to tackle.
The most common reason for office stress is a difficult boss. But this may be far easier to solve than you imagine. Improving communication with your boss by having a sincere conversation may make a difference. Try and see if you can synchronize his expectations with yours. Sometimes your superior may set unreal targets but instead of stressing yourself to meet these targets, it can be far easier to have an honest discussion in which you can inform him of what deadlines can be met.
Another reason could be difficult colleagues or co-workers. Dealing with a difficult co-worker can be a bit more difficult as their performance is often pitted against yours. This again has to be resolved by an amicable discussion, concluded by a mutual agreement. You can explain to him how working as a team can have far more benefits than indulging in rivalry. But if things are getting out of hand, you should take up the issue with a superior.
Tasks that are not part of your role or skill set can also cause stress. Companies often make employees multi-task but this could potentially affect the results. Communicating with your superiors about this matter at the earliest is the best way to resolve this.
Separate home issues from work issues. Leave your work at office, and leave your domestic issues at home. Letting one affect the other can be a huge reason for stress. Balancing work and home by allotting adequate time for both can help reduce stress.

How to De-stress in Office

The best way to de-stress in office is by taking out a few minutes from work to focus on something else. Meditation is a tried and tested method of unwinding at office. All you have to do is switch off your cell phone, find a quiet corner, and then meditate. You can do this by shutting your eyes, relaxing your body and thinking about pleasant thoughts. It will also help if you can listen to some calming meditation music on your music player while you do this.
Reading funny emails or funny videos on the Internet can also help you unwind. A good laugh once in a while can do wonders for you in your fight against stress. You can log on to the Internet and find funny videos, or find jokes, or read an amusing blog. Preferably find content which is not too taxing on your mind.
Calling up a friend or spouse is also a good idea. Chatting about things unrelated to office can also help relieve stress. If you have games on your cell phone, you can also play a small game and recharge yourself.

Prevent Stressful Situations in Office

Practicing time management is the best way of ensuring that you do not get stressed at office. Always be disciplined and follow your daily schedule. Being punctual will remove half the stress of your day. Plan out your day in advance, and make sure you set realistic deadlines and goals for yourself, so that you do not set yourself up for a fall.
Do not get obsessed with work. Many people today are workaholics for greater returns, but you must realize that it takes a toll on your body and mind. Balancing fun activities, relationships, family events, etc. and work will really reduce office stress. Also lose habits like coffee, late nights, alcohol and smoking which seem to relieve stress but only tend to make things worse.
In your free time, take part in activities like gymming, swimming, meditation or yoga. The positive effects of such activities reflect on your work as well. A healthier body is more resistant to stress. Also make sure you keep checking your blood pressure and cholesterol at regular intervals to make sure you are not stressing yourself out too much. And if necessary, take a long holiday with the family to rejuvenate yourself.
With these few ideas, you should be able to handle stress better. And if the stress gets completely out of hand, maybe you are better off somewhere else!
