Composition of Breast Milk

Composition of Breast Milk

Breast milk consists of foremilk and hindmilk. The hindmilk has high fat content. The fat content gradually keeps increasing as the baby empties out the breast. Foremilk quenches the baby's thirst.

The first milk of the mother which is also known as colostrum is very important for the baby. It is yellowish in colour and loaded with all the essential nutrients for the baby. It also contains immune cells and antibodies which are very helpful for the baby. Let us take a look at some concerns of new mothers related to composition of breast milk and breastfeeding.

I think my breast milk is too thin

In the beginning of the feed, the milk (foremilk) normally looks blue and watery. It is not surprising that some mothers doubt its nutritional value. However, appearances can be deceptive. This foremilk is rich in protein, lactose, vitamins, minerals and water. Towards the end of the feed, the hindmilk looks whiter because it is rich in fat.

Why is it important to allow the baby to keep suckling from one side?

Babies need both foremilk and hindmilk. Foremilk quenches her thirst and hindmilk provides fat and calories. That is why it is important that the baby be allowed to keep suckling from one side till he gets the hindmilk and leaves the breast on his own. Only then should she be offered the other breast. Babies allowed such freedom often get satisfied by suckling only from one side. Remember that you should alternate the side that you first offer with each feed to ensure that you get an even supply of milk from both your breasts.

Can diet of mother affect the quality of breastmilk?

A breastfeeding mother should consume a healthy and nutritious food. It is not necessary to stick to a particular diet and breastfeeding mothers can eat whatever they like. But caffeine intake must be under control. Although, it is not necessary to completely cut-down the alcoholic drinks, it is better to stop taking them while breastfeeding. Intake of junk foods should also be under control.

Is it necessary to take vitamin supplements while breastfeeding?

After your delivery your doctor may advice you to continue taking certain vitamin supplements. Calcium supplements are very beneficial for breastfeeding mothers. In case if your doctor has not prescribed such supplements, you must talk to him so that he can prescribe right supplements to support your breastfeeding needs. Calcium supplements aid in the production of calcium rich breast milk for the baby. Calcium is utilised by the mother’s body during the period of pregnancy and while breastfeeding which may lead to depletion of the levels of calcium in her body. Therefore, taking calcium supplements can help in preventing calcium deficiency related diseases later on in life.

How to improve the breastmilk supply?

After delivery some mothers may feel that their breasts have no milk and will be discouraged to breastfeed the baby. At this time, they must encourage the baby to suck the breast by putting the nipple in her mouth. When the baby will start sucking your breast, her natural suckling reflex will help to boost the flow of milk in your breasts. Allow her to suck from both the sides so that milk flow is encouraged in both the breasts. You must also massage your breasts to encourage the milk flow. Within some days of this exercise, you will realise that your breast is getting filled with milk. You must have nutritious foods and drinks whenever you feel hungry or thirsty.
Breastfeeding a baby is extremely important. It is ideal to breastfeed a baby at least for 12 to 18 months. Breastfed babies are healthy and fall ill less frequently. Breastfeeding can help to lay a strong foundation for raising healthy children.
